First 48 Gallery – hospital newborn photographer Northern Virginia

First 48 Gallery

There is nothing more special than falling in love with your baby for the first time — wouldn’t it be incredible to have these memories documented to remember forever? The First 48 newborn session does just that. I come to your hospital room, or to your home if you give birth outside the hospital, in the first two days after birth to capture those first moments with baby getting to know her/his new family.  First 48 sessions usually take 1-2 hours, allowing plenty of time for feeding and comforting, and the gallery includes at least 30 edited images.

First 48 sessions are available at an all-inclusive rate for clients who have booked a newborn portrait or lifestyle newborn session. The all-inclusive session price includes the digital images (printable up to 8×10) and a slideshow set to music. There is very limited availability for these sessions due to their “on-call” nature, but I absolutely love them! There is truly nothing else like those first days with your baby, and it is always an honor to document them.

Hospitals served: INOVA Fairfax; INOVA Fair Oaks; INOVA Loudoun; INOVA Alexandria; Prince William Medical Center; Haymarket Medical Center; Reston Hospital Center; Virginia Hospital Center; Fauquier Hospital. Other hospitals may be considered upon request. Please note that I can only take hospital sessions for clients who plan to stay in the hospital for a full 48 hours after the birth. If you are planning to check out earlier than that, we can plan an in-home session or a “bringing home baby” session.

Frequently Asked Questions about First 48 Sessions

How do I schedule a First 48 session when I don’t know when my baby will be born?

When you book, I will make a note of your due date to make sure I maintain availability on my calendar. Toward the end of your pregnancy, we keep in touch by email or text so you can let me know if there are any new developments such as a scheduled induction date. If your birth is not scheduled, just text me when you know you are in labor so that I can begin to make child care arrangements if necessary. Then after baby arrives, let me know, and we will set a time for the session. If it is a weekday, I will usually try to come first thing in the morning if visiting hours allow. Depending on the time of day baby was born, sometimes parents prefer to have me come in the second day so they have a bit more time to recover, shower, etc.

Can other family members participate in the session?

Yes, absolutely! Siblings and grandparents are welcome to be present. Depending on the age of the siblings, it often works well for them to either come in about halfway through the session or to stay just for the first half so that we can be sure to get plenty of images of baby with mom and dad with no distractions.

Why would I want to be in pictures right after giving birth? I won’t be looking my best.

I totally understand your hesitation — I remember not feeling presentable after giving birth. It is a tumultuous time with lots of hormones and emotions. But I can tell you that the pictures I had my husband take after my last baby was born (I set the camera up for him and he did his best!) are some of the most precious images I have. I tend to be self-conscious about the way I look in pictures (doctors make the worst patients and all of that!), but all I can see in those images is the bond between my son and me. I promise that I always shoot and crop images in the most flattering way possible for moms! But honestly, the joy and love that emanate from First 48 session images renders all else unimportant. You will never regret having these memories in print!

Is there are special rate for adding a First 48 session to a newborn session?

Yes! I am cognizant of the fact that this is a lot of photography at once, so I make these sessions affordable because I love them and don’t want anyone to miss out on these special memories. A First 48 session can be added on for a special rate of 500, which includes the full gallery of digital images. And if desired, you can include images from your First 48 session in your newborn album.  When booked alone, First 48 is priced the same as any other newborn session.
